Toptal alternatives split three ways: cheaper vetted networks such as Arc and Lemon.io, the open marketplace at Upwork, and development agencies that deliver a working system instead of an individual.
Toptal's published model is a $500 deposit, a $79 monthly fee and rates of $80 to $220+ an hour, per its own pricing pages. AI engineers sit at $220 and up. That buys real screening; by Toptal's account, fewer than 3% of applicants get in.
So the question isn't whether Toptal is good. It's whether a screened individual is the right unit to buy, because at $220 an hour the spec, the reviews and the maintenance are still yours.

05What carries over if I leave Toptal mid-project?+
Code and documents you've already received carry over; the engagement itself doesn't follow the person. Marketplace agreements generally restrict hiring the same individual directly, so check your contract before planning that route. Insist on repo access and written handover notes from the first week, whichever platform you use.
