Zapier's catalogue is larger and its editor asks less of a new user. For a straight chain of steps between well-known apps, that ease wins.

Make earns its place once a workflow branches, loops over a list, or reshapes data mid-scenario. Its visual builder shows that logic in a way a linear chain cannot. Neither tool self-hosts, so a private database or a compliance question sends both toward n8n.

  • Operations billing counts per item per module, so a loop over a hundred records costs a hundred times what the diagram suggests.
  • A run that fails is discarded by default, unless you configure the scenario to store incomplete executions first.
  • No self-hosting, so data residency has no answer beyond Make's own cloud.
  • There is no real version control, so comparing two versions of a scenario is nothing like reading a diff.

01Is Make cheaper than Zapier?

Which one costs less depends on how much the workflow branches and loops. Zapier counts each successful action as a task and does not bill failures. Make counts each module action as an operation. A scenario with an iterator over many items can burn through operations fast, even on a short run. A simple, low-branch workflow often costs less on Zapier. A scenario with heavy branching can cost less on Make, because Zapier needs extra steps to do the same routing.

02Can you use both Make and Zapier?

Yes, though most teams settle on one to avoid maintaining two billing accounts and two places to debug. Where both are already in use, a common split is Zapier for simple app-to-app connections and Make for anything with real branching. Document which tool owns which process either way.

03Does Make replace Zapier's app catalogue?

Not entirely. Zapier's catalogue is larger, at over 9,000 apps against Make's 3,000-plus standard apps. Most common business software is covered by both. The gap shows up on niche or newer tools, where Zapier is more likely to already have a connector.

04When should a team move past both Make and Zapier?

Two situations. The workflow needs to reach a database or internal service you would not expose to the public internet. Or per-action billing on a high-volume workflow becomes the largest line in the automation budget. Both cases point at self-hosted n8n, which runs inside your own network and bills per workflow run rather than per step.

05Is Make harder to learn than Zapier?

It asks more of a first session. Zapier's linear chain of steps is closer to how most people already think about automation. Make's canvas, with routers and data mapping laid out visually, takes longer to get comfortable with but reads complex logic better once you are.
