What is endpointing?

It is why a caller reciting a VIN gets cut off mid-pause. And why a caller asking a question feels like they're waiting for a reply that never comes.

Endpointing

end-of-speech detection

Endpointing is the process a voice agent uses to decide a caller has stopped speaking and it is the agent's turn to respond. It works from silence, not from meaning, so the length of pause it waits for is a setting, not a fact.

People do not speak in tidy, finished sentences on a phone call. They pause to think, trail off, then keep going. Endpointing watches for a gap in speech. Within a few hundred milliseconds, it decides whether that gap means the caller is done, or just breathing.

Wait too short, and the agent starts talking over someone who was still mid-thought. Too long, and every reply arrives a beat late. That reads as slow even when the model itself answered instantly. The gap length is a number a team chooses. Get it wrong and callers say one of two things: it keeps cutting me off, or the pauses are awkward.

Why it matters

Why one setting does not fit every call

A caller reciting a VIN or a policy number pauses between characters and groups of digits. Those pauses are part of the number, not the end of it. A short endpointing gap will cut that caller off partway through, and the agent asks them to repeat something they already said.

A caller asking an open question pauses differently. A short breath, then the rest of the sentence, then a longer stop when they are actually finished. Wait as long for that caller as you would for someone reading digits, and the call feels like it is on a delay.

This is why we tune the gap per use case rather than shipping one default. We built the inbound voice agents for ZhoopZhoop, a multi-branch auto repair business. Callers there read out a plate or a VIN, then book a service in the same call. A single generic pause length would have broken one of those two moments.

Deciding a turn is overLive
  1. Caller speaksAudio streams in continuously.
  2. Gap detectedSpeech stops for a moment.
  3. Threshold checkIs the gap long enough to count as done?
  4. Turn endsAgent treats the utterance as finished.
  5. Reply startsAgent begins processing a response.

Step three's threshold is the whole feature. Set for a VIN reader, it is too slow for someone asking a quick question, and the other way around.

Questions, answered

Common questions

01Is endpointing the same as turn detection?

No. Endpointing is the specific mechanism that decides a pause means the caller has finished. Turn detection is broader. It decides whose turn it is to speak at all, including a caller who says "hold on" without meaning to end their turn.

02Can endpointing be adjusted after a voice agent is live?

Yes, and it usually needs to be. The right pause length only becomes clear once real callers, not test scripts, are hitting the system. Teams revisit this setting after launch rather than finalizing it before.

03Does a longer endpointing pause make a voice agent more accurate?

Not on its own. A longer pause reduces false cutoffs but adds a fixed delay to every single reply, including the ones that did not need it. The fix is matching the pause to what the caller is likely doing, not lengthening it everywhere.
