AI developer hourly rates in 2026

Most rate pages quote a number with no source behind it. This one is a table of published 2026 figures, each with its source and date.

The verdict

Published 2026 data puts senior AI engineers at a $55/hr median on vetted platforms (Lemon.io, 2,500+ contracts), $25-$200+/hr on open marketplaces, and $130-$250/hr at agencies, with a 28% salary premium for AI skills (Lightcast) on the employment side.

That spread is not noise. Vetted platforms publish narrow ranges because they screen who gets in. Open marketplaces span $25 to $200+ because nobody screens anyone. Agencies charge the top of the market and answer for the outcome rather than the hours. Which number applies to you depends on who carries the risk when the work is wrong.

The short answer

5 things that decide this

  1. 01Senior AI engineers earn $43 to $79.20 an hour with a $55 median on Lemon.io's April 2026 data, built from 2,500+ contracts; North America averages $66 and the top tier reaches $105.
  2. 02Machine learning engineers run $39.90 to $77.20 an hour and LLM engineers $37 to $58.70 on the same vetted-platform data (Lemon.io, April 2026).
  3. 03Open-marketplace AI rates of $25 to $200+ an hour circulate secondhand, because Upwork's own rate pages can't be read by the tools that would verify them.
  4. 04Regional seniors price at $60 to $75 an hour in Latin America, $64 to $76 in Central and Eastern Europe, and $31 to $41 in Asia, and rates fell 4 to 8% year over year (Accelerance 60-firm survey, 2026).
  5. 05On the employment side, AI skills carry a 28% salary premium, about $18,000 a year, across 1.3 billion job postings analyzed by Lightcast.

The data gap

Why Upwork's numbers can't be checked

Upwork ranks first on Google for phrases like "machine learning engineer hourly rate". Its rate and cost pages, though, return an access error to automated readers, including the crawlers that feed AI assistants. So Upwork's medians circulate only through third-party summaries. Our table's $25 to $200+ marketplace figures come from AdSnipper's 2026 roundup, which is openly readable, and we flag them as secondhand for that reason.

It's the same story at contractrates.fyi, a crowdsourced rate site that AI assistants often cite. It rate-limits readers, so we name it here without leaning on its numbers. When a rate can't be fetched and re-checked, treat it as a claim, not data. That rule is why every row above carries a source you can open today.

Reading the table

What moves a rate, and what a rate doesn't tell you

Three things set the hourly number: vetting, region, and how much risk the seller absorbs. Vetting narrows the range, which is why Lemon.io's band is tight while marketplaces span 8x. Region shifts it, and the direction is down: Accelerance's 2026 survey has offshore senior rates 4 to 8% below last year. Risk raises it. An agency's rate covers senior review, replacement if someone leaves, and accountability for the result, which is what the $130 to $250 agency band is buying.

What no rate tells you is the project's cost. A $40-an-hour engineer who needs 400 hours and a rewrite costs more than a $90-an-hour engineer who ships in 150. We've written separately about why rate cards mislead on total cost. In short: hours, rework, and accountability move your bill more than the rate does.

Questions, answered
01How much do AI developers charge per hour?+

Senior AI engineers charge a $55-an-hour median on vetted platforms (Lemon.io, April 2026, 2,500+ contracts). Open marketplaces run $25 to $200+ by secondhand 2026 reports, and agencies $130 to $250. Region moves the number: North American seniors average $66 an hour on the same Lemon.io data, while Accelerance puts senior rates in Asia at $31 to $41.

02How much does a machine learning engineer cost per hour?+

Machine learning engineers cost $39.90 to $77.20 an hour on Lemon.io's April 2026 vetted-platform data. Marketplace listings run $50 to $200+ an hour, a figure that circulates secondhand because Upwork's own rate pages block automated readers. Turing's network is reported at $100 to $200 an hour in the same 2026 roundup.

03What salary does an AI engineer earn in the US?+

AI skills carry a 28% salary premium, worth about $18,000 a year, across 1.3 billion job postings analyzed by Lightcast. At the specialist end, SecondTalent's 2026 rate card puts AI agent developer salaries at $120,000 to $450,000 and up. Hiring an employee competes with those numbers, plus benefits and ramp-up time, which is what pushes many teams to contract rates instead.

04Why do AI developer rates vary so much?+

AI developer rates vary because vetting, region, and accountability all price separately. Unvetted marketplaces span $25 to $200+ an hour for the same job title, while Lemon.io's screened pool sits in a $43 to $79.20 band (April 2026). Accelerance's survey shows region alone moving senior rates from $31 in Asia to $76 in Eastern Europe. What's left of the spread is priced accountability: at the top of the market, someone else fixes the mistakes.
