How much does it cost to build an app?

Published guides answer this with anything from $5,000 to $400,000. Every number below is third-party and sourced, and the disagreement itself gets explained.

The verdict

Most production apps in 2026 cost $30,000-$120,000 to build with an experienced team; Clutch's review data puts the average custom software project at $132,480, and any quote far outside that range is explained by team region or the vendor's business model, not the app.

Clutch's average holds up against the hourly math. A senior remote developer runs $28 to $100 an hour with a $44.90 global median (Lemon.io, April 2026, 2,500+ contracts), and a production app takes a small team months. Multiply those and you land in the same band. Quotes far below it are pricing a different product; quotes far above it are pricing a different team.

The short answer

5 things that decide this

  1. 01Most production apps in 2026 cost $30,000 to $120,000 to build with an experienced team, and Clutch's review data puts the average custom software project at $132,480 over about 13 months.
  2. 02Topflight's 2026 guide prices a simple app at $30,000 to $40,000 and enterprise builds at $250,000 and up, with AI features adding $20,000 to $50,000.
  3. 03Hourly rates drive most of the spread: Clutch reports US teams at $50 to $99 an hour and offshore teams at $25 to $49, in line with Accelerance's 60-firm survey.
  4. 04Maintenance is a standing cost of about 25% of the build price per year (Topflight, 2026), and it's missing from most quotes.
  5. 05A $5,000 quote and a $100,000 quote for a "simple app" are both real. Each author prices the product they sell, which is why the guides disagree.

The real answer

Why published ranges disagree

A "simple app" costs $5,000 in Bubble's guide and up to $100,000 in Appinventiv's. Neither is lying. Bubble sells a no-code platform, so its number prices configuration on Bubble. Appinventiv sells agency teams, so its number prices custom engineering. Offshore firms quote offshore hours, US firms quote US seniors. Every cost guide is a menu for its author's own kitchen, and no guide says so.

That neutral layer is thin, and getting thinner. Survey sites that aggregate real project data (GoodFirms and Business of Apps among them) block automated readers, and so does Upwork's flagship cost guide. AI assistants answering this question end up citing agency marketing pages. That's why this page quotes only sources you can open and check today, and why we publish no price of our own next to them.

Your number

What actually moves the cost of your app

Inside any one team's pricing, four things move the number most. Count them for your app before you collect quotes, and the quotes will start to make sense.

  • 01Integrations: every system the app must read or write (payments, a CRM, an EHR, your ERP, or whatever you run) adds engineering and testing
  • 02Backend depth: a thin app over an existing service costs a fraction of one that needs its own accounts, data model, and admin tools
  • 03Compliance and category: Appinventiv's spread from $30,000 eCommerce builds to $400,000+ healthcare builds is mostly regulation and data handling
  • 04AI features: $20,000 to $50,000 on top of the base build (Topflight, 2026), because model behavior has to be tested, not just wired in
  • 05Who runs it after launch: at about 25% of build cost per year (Topflight), five years of maintenance can exceed the build itself
Questions, answered
01How much does a simple app cost?+

A simple app costs $30,000 to $40,000 with an experienced custom team, by Topflight's 2026 guide. No-code guides quote as little as $5,000, because they price configuration on a platform rather than custom engineering. The word "simple" is doing the work in both numbers: one screen count, two different products.

02How much do app developers charge per hour?+

App development rates in 2026 run $50 to $99 an hour for US teams and $25 to $49 offshore, per Clutch's pricing data. Accelerance's 60-firm survey puts senior rates at $60 to $75 in Latin America, $64 to $76 in Central and Eastern Europe, and $31 to $41 in Asia. Those rates fell 4 to 8% in a year. Lemon.io's vetted-platform median is $44.90 an hour across 2,500+ contracts.

03How much does it cost to maintain an app per year?+

About 25% of the original build cost per year, by Topflight's 2026 guide. That covers OS and dependency updates, bug fixes, monitoring, and small improvements. On a $100,000 build that's roughly $25,000 a year. Put that line in your budget before the build starts, because quotes that omit it look cheaper than they are.

04Is it cheaper to build an app with an AI app builder?+

Yes, at the start: AI app builders produce a working prototype for a fraction of the $30,000 to $40,000 simple-app figure in Topflight's guide. They're the fastest way to test whether anyone wants the product. Costs move later, into rework, when the app needs real integrations, permissions, or scale that the generated codebase wasn't built to carry. Use them to validate, and budget the production build separately.

05What is a realistic budget for an MVP?+

A realistic MVP budget in 2026 sits between Topflight's $30,000 to $40,000 simple-app figure and Clutch's $132,480 custom-project average. Where you land depends on how many systems the MVP must integrate. Below that band you're buying a prototype, which is a legitimate first step if you plan for the rebuild. The cheapest honest move is cutting features, not hourly rates.
