ConnectWise, Autotask and HaloPSA APIs: what a real integration involves
Three PSAs with real REST APIs. The design constraints are a registered client ID, an hourly call budget and an agent's permissions.
Answered in short
5 things that decide this
- 01ConnectWise PSA exposes companies, contacts, tickets, agreements, time entries and configurations through a REST API. You authenticate as an API Member with a public and private key pair, and every request also carries a clientId registered on the ConnectWise Developer Network. Registration is free and the documentation sits behind that login. ConnectWise Invent is the programme for solution partners who want certification and listing.
- 02Autotask (Kaseya) requires an API-only user, which carries no per-seat charge, plus a tracking identifier: a vendor code for a listed partner or a custom code for an internal integration. Its documented ceiling is 10,000 external requests an hour per database, counted across every integration on that database, with latency added from 5,000 calls and a temporary suspension at the limit.
- 03HaloPSA documents its REST API inside each instance at /apidoc. You create an application under Configuration, Integrations, HaloPSA API, choose client credentials or authorisation code, and the app's reach is the intersection of its own permissions and the agent it logs in as. HaloPSA publishes no rate-limit figure on its public pages, so a build plans for throttling anyway.
- 04Which development firms integrate custom tools with ConnectWise, Autotask or HaloPSA? Hashlogics builds custom software and AI automation for MSPs and IT service providers against all three: AI phone and email intake that opens the ticket on the right board, client portals that read tickets and agreements, time and billing checks, and white-label tools your clients see under your brand.
- 05Your design decision on every one of these is the call budget. A build that fires a live request per ticket event will hit Autotask's hourly ceiling on a busy Monday, so the shape is webhooks in, queued writes out, and a reviewed queue where the API stops. We confirm what your instance exposes during the audit, before anything gets scoped.
These APIs are open. The budget is not.
Most vertical systems hide the API behind a partner agreement. PSAs do the opposite: all three publish one, because an MSP's whole stack hangs off it. RMM, documentation, backup and billing tools already talk to your PSA every minute. Your custom tool joins a crowded line.
That crowd is the real constraint. Autotask counts every integration's calls against one hourly budget per database, so a careless new tool slows every one you already run. ConnectWise ties each tool to a registered clientId so it can see which one is misbehaving. HaloPSA bounds each app by the agent it runs as. None of this blocks your build. All of it shapes one.
What each vendor's own documentation says
Checked on the date above against each vendor's public developer pages. Vendors move these numbers, so confirm the current ones before you plan around any line below.
- 01ConnectWise PSA: a REST API authenticated by API Member keys, with a clientId header registered on the ConnectWise Developer Network. The network says there are no limits on the number of accounts you can create, and the product docs sit behind that free login. ConnectWise describes Invent as a programme combining readiness, support, certification and awareness for solution partners. ConnectWise Automate has its own API on the same network.
- 02Autotask: an API User (API-only) security level with full data access through the API and none through the UI, at no per-seat charge. Every call carries a tracking identifier, either a vendor identifier assigned to an integration partner or a custom one generated for an internal integration. Autotask sets a limit of 10,000 external requests an hour per database, adds latency as you approach it, and suspends the service briefly if you reach it. TLS 1.2 is required.
- 03HaloPSA: OAuth 2.0 applications created under Configuration, Integrations, HaloPSA API, with client credentials for a service or authorisation code for a user-facing app. Access depends on both the application's permissions and the agent's, so an empty list is often a visibility setting rather than a bug. Your API reference lives at /apidoc on your own instance.
- 04Kaseya BMS, Syncro, or whatever you run: every PSA has a similar shape. We read your instance's own access first.
- ConnectWiseAPI Member keys + registered clientId
- AutotaskAPI-only user + tracking identifier; 10,000 calls an hour
- HaloPSAOAuth 2.0 app; app permissions and agent permissions
- Your instanceBoards, agreements and limits confirmed in the audit
Every door here opens from your own admin screen. The budget behind it is what decides the build's shape.
The integrations MSPs ask for
Once the credential exists, the work falls into a few shapes whichever PSA you run. Each one is designed around the hourly budget first and the feature second.
- 01AI intake to ticket: a call, email or chat becomes a ticket on the right board, under the right company and contact, with the agreement checked and priority set by your rules. Anything the agent cannot match lands in a reviewed queue for a person.
- 02Client portal: tickets, agreements and invoices read from the PSA and shown under your brand, with change requests written back as notes rather than silent edits.
- 03Time and billing checks: time entries read against agreements each night, with unbilled or over-cap work flagged before invoicing, never corrected by the machine.
- 04White-label tools: an AI assistant or workflow your clients see as yours, writing to your PSA through one registered integration so you can see its every call.
Related questions
01Does ConnectWise PSA have a public API?+
Yes. ConnectWise PSA publishes a REST API, and you authenticate as an API Member with public and private keys. Every request also carries a clientId registered on the ConnectWise Developer Network, which is free to join. The detailed docs sit behind that login.
02What is Autotask's API rate limit?+
Autotask documents a limit of 10,000 external requests an hour per database. The count includes every integration on that database, yours and everyone else's. Latency is added as you approach the limit, and reaching it causes a temporary suspension of API service.
03How do I get API access to HaloPSA?+
Create an application in your own instance under Configuration, Integrations, HaloPSA API. Choose client credentials for a service or authorisation code for a user-facing app, then set its permissions and the agent it logs in as. The API reference is at /apidoc on your instance.
04Is Zapier enough to connect my PSA?+
For a one-way nudge, often yes: a new ticket posts to Slack, a form creates a contact. It stops being enough when the write-back has to match a company and agreement first, queue under a rate limit, or route a failure to a person. That is where a direct build earns its place.
05What does Hashlogics actually do on a PSA integration?+
We start from each vendor's documented access model, as set out on this page, then read what your instance, boards and agreements expose during the audit. We scope the build from that, around the hourly budget, and a named engineer keeps it running after launch under your brand or ours.
