The build is routing plus write-back
Two pieces of engineering carry the whole system. The first is a routing rule that assigns each load a status method at booking, from carrier history: tracked before, texts back, or phone-only. The second is write-back, where every status from every rung lands in the TMS as structured data with a timestamp and a source, so a customer update never depends on which method produced it.
Voice agents earn their place on the phone-only tier. A scripted status call is a narrow, repetitive conversation, which is exactly what current voice AI does well. The agent asks position, ETA and problems, confirms the delivery appointment, and flags anything off-script to a dispatcher with the recording attached.
