Does an EV charger installation require a panel upgrade?
Every charger call sounds like the same job. Many aren't, and the difference is math you can run before the visit or discover on the driveway.

- 01An EV charger installation does not always require a panel upgrade. It requires a load calculation. If the home's existing loads plus the charger's rated load fit within the electrical service, the charger goes on a new dedicated circuit; if they don't, the options are a load-management setup, a lower charger setting, or a panel or service upgrade.
- 02Under NEC 2026 the charger counts in that calculation at its nameplate rating, or 7,200 watts where none is listed, at 100 percent. A 48-amp charger at 240 volts is about 11.5 kilowatts, close to half of everything a 100-amp service can carry, which is why older homes on smaller services are the ones that fail the math.
- 03Load management is the third answer. NEC 2026 recognizes power control systems and treats the managed setpoint as the load. Chargers with built-in current sensing, such as the Schneider Charge that Qmerit describes, dial charging back when the house is busy. The trade-off is slower charging on a busy evening.
- 04States adopt code editions on their own schedules, so your inspector may still enforce the 2023 math. Your inputs don't change: service amperage, panel space, the major loads already installed, and the charger's nameplate. Collect those at intake and you know the answer before anyone drives.
Service capacity, panel space and the charger's nameplate
Two different things get called 'a full panel'. One is breaker space: no open slots. You fix that with a subpanel, and it isn't an upgrade. Service capacity is the other: how much load the utility feed and the main breaker can carry. No subpanel fixes that. That's the question the load calculation answers.
Guidance from the Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center says the same. Some homes might have insufficient electric capacity for Level 2 equipment, it notes, and a qualified electrician can add circuits to accommodate the capacity needed. Level 1 charging on an existing dedicated 120-volt outlet often needs no installation. A Level 2 unit runs at 240 volts on its own circuit, and that circuit is what has to fit.
NEC 2026 changed how you count the charger. Kopperfield's analysis of the new edition notes two rules. Section 120.57 sets the EV charging load at the nameplate rating, or 7,200 watts where none is listed, counted at 100 percent. Charger-only, load-managed, or upgrade: how each gets quoted
Charger-only: the math passes with the charger at full nameplate. You install a dedicated circuit and the charger, pull the permit and sometimes notify the utility. It's the job every homeowner hopes they're buying.
Load-managed: the math fails at full nameplate but passes at a managed setpoint. Either you hardwire the charger at a lower current, or a power control system caps its draw when other loads run. Qmerit describes Schneider Charge's SmartAmp that way: current transformers on the panel watch the home's draw and dial the charger back to stay within limits. Your customer keeps the panel and gives up some speed on busy evenings.
Upgrade: the math fails even when managed, or the homeowner wants full speed on a small service. Now you're selling a panel or service upgrade plus the charger: utility coordination, a bigger permit, a longer job. Quote it as that from the first call and it's a clean sale. Find it on the driveway after a charger-only quote and it's the revision that loses the job to whoever quoted the truth first.

Often, yes, because the math counts the charger at its nameplate. A charger set or hardwired at 32 amps adds about 7.7 kilowatts at 240 volts, against 11.5 for a 48-amp unit. Many hardwired chargers can be set to a lower current at install time, and NEC 2026 applies the same logic to a power control system's setpoint. You give up charging speed, and the setting has to be one your inspector accepts as fixed.
02Does a 200-amp service always pass?+
No. A larger service passes more often, but the math counts everything already on it. An all-electric home with a heat pump, electric range, dryer, tankless water heater and hot tub can fail at full nameplate even on 200 amps. Your inputs decide, not the service size alone.
