An on-demand app is three apps and a set of money rules: a customer app, a provider app and an admin console. The hard part is rarely the booking screen. It is holding your customer's payment until the work is done, checking each provider before they take a job, and settling a dispute in a way you can defend. Start with one service in one area. A super app comes later, one service at a time.
What kinds of on-demand app do you need?
Each shape has its own hard part, so we start by naming yours. We agree your matching rule before any screen is designed, because it shapes the data model, including what happens when nobody takes a job.
Service apps: handyman, cleaning, home repair
Your provider goes to the customer, and each job has a quote, a time slot and a finish. With held payments, the provider is paid once the work is done. WorkMateAI, the Australian trades marketplace we built the trust-and-safety system for, holds each payment on Stripe Connect and releases it against the work. Dispatch is often a match on skill, area and calendar. Maidily, a platform for cleaning businesses rather than a marketplace, assigns jobs from a drag-and-drop calendar with GPS routing. It reports 75% fewer no-shows and payments collected 4X faster (client-reported).
Delivery apps: food, grocery, medicine, courier
One order can pay a store and a courier, and the courier may not be known yet when your customer pays. Live tracking and dispatch matter more than quotes: a delivery app may look for the nearest free courier and recalculate as orders come in. Regulated items such as medicine add the checks your local rules require, built in before an order can leave.
Rental apps: equipment, vehicles, spaces
Each item has a calendar, so dates and pickup windows decide everything. A rental app may have no dispatcher at all, but its server has to stop one item being booked twice for the same dates. Renthall, the equipment rental marketplace we helped build, takes start and end dates with pickup and return times. Renthall's renters see the fee breakdown across rental, service and insurance before paying.
Should you start from a clone app script?
A clone script is a real option for testing demand. Oyelabs, for example, sells an Uber for X clone script it calls 100% customizable, with the complete licensed source code. Its providers upload documents and wait for admin approval. JungleWorks sells Tookan for dispatch, with route optimization and real-time tracking, and Yelo for launching a multi-vendor ordering platform without coding.
Read on 31 October 2026, those three public pages describe booking, dispatch and admin features, and the JungleWorks pages list payment gateways, in-app wallets and, for Yelo, a commission model. None of them sets out who answers a chargeback, or when a provider gets paid on a disputed job. Those answers depend on your payment provider, your country and your own terms.
That's where a marketplace carries its risk. Before we started, WorkMateAI's payments happened off-platform, and there was no contract framework between the parties. Its messaging language could also imply the platform was liable. So the work started with a review of where the risk sat, then the design: a three-layer agreement model and a phased dispute plan, before the payment build.
How do held payments work on Stripe Connect?
Stripe Connect offers three charge types. Along with who is responsible for negative balances, the charge type decides who answers a chargeback. Destination charges fit a service job. To hold money until the work is done, you delay the provider's payout, which Stripe suggests when you think a refund is possible. Separate charges and transfers fit a delivery order still waiting for a courier, and Stripe says they need a more complex integration. Every cell below comes from Stripe's own documentation, read on 31 October 2026.
What Stripe describes them for
Destination charges
Customers paying your platform for a service a connected account provides.
Separate charges and transfers
One payment split across several connected accounts, or a provider not known at payment.
When funds move
Destination charges
Transferred to the connected account straight away.
Separate charges and transfers
Your platform creates each transfer, separately from the charge.
A failed async payment
Destination charges
Stripe reverses the transfer automatically.
Separate charges and transfers
You reverse the transfer by hand, because Stripe doesn't do it automatically.
A refund, by default
Destination charges
Your provider keeps the transferred funds, and your platform covers the negative balance.
Separate charges and transfers
Transfers are untouched. Your platform reduces later transfers or reverses them.
Stripe's own guidance
Destination charges
Stripe recommends them for connected accounts without the full Stripe Dashboard.
Separate charges and transfers
Recommended only when your platform is responsible for connected accounts' negative balances.
How do providers get checked before they take work?
Your providers shouldn't see a job until they've passed the checks your market needs. For WorkMateAI, that meant verifying each tradie's ABN, trade licence and insurance before they could accept work. A cleaning or courier app will have its own list, and we write it with you in the Blueprint.
Payment checks are a second, separate layer. Stripe calls them Know Your Customer requirements: your platform collects the details and Stripe attempts verification. If required information isn't provided or verified by Stripe's thresholds, charges or payouts are paused for a time. Its documentation also tells platforms not to rely on Stripe's verification for any independent legal KYC requirement, and to keep monitoring for fraud.
So onboarding runs in two passes, your trade checks and then the payment provider's. A provider who fails either one sees which check failed, and your admin console shows the status of each.
- BookQuote accepted, payment held.
- MatchOffered to a checked provider.
- WorkCheck-in, photos and notes logged.
- ConfirmCustomer signs off, or the window closes.
- ReleaseProvider paid, platform fee kept.
Five stations and one exit. A dispute filed at any point after Book freezes the payment and opens a case for your admin team.
What happens when a customer disputes a job?
A marketplace's legal exposure shows up in its disputes. WorkMateAI's process runs in phases: manual review first, then rules for repeat patterns, with AI help planned once case volume grows. When either side files a dispute, the payment freezes and an evidence locker opens for both parties.
Card chargebacks follow your payment provider's rules as well as yours. On Stripe Connect, two things decide whether you or the provider responds to a chargeback: the charge type and who is responsible for negative balances. They also decide which account Stripe debits for the chargeback and fees. So we pick your charge type with disputes in mind, not only checkout.
- Three agreements with version history: platform terms, a provider agreement, and a contract per accepted job.
- Payment frozen the moment a dispute is filed.
- An admin case dashboard with automated timers and alerts.
- Chargeback evidence generated by the system.

How does an on-demand build start?
Each step after the call leaves you something you can act on.
- 01
Scoping call
A free 45-minute call with a senior engineer, under NDA. Bring your app shape, your market and how you plan to take a fee.
- 02
Blueprint
Every build starts with a Blueprint: a fixed-fee plan an engineer writes from your real systems. It sets out scope, architecture, risks and a fixed price for each milestone, and it names your charge type, provider checks and dispute steps. The fee is credited in full against the build. If the Blueprint doesn't give you a plan you'd act on, you don't pay for it.
- 03
Build
Builds are fixed-price per milestone, accepted against written criteria rather than billed by the hour. The money paths, from hold to refund, are part of those written criteria.
- 04
Run
Support and maintenance for the first 2 months are included. Then you can choose written service levels: a month we miss them is a month you don't pay for. Or you can take a documented handover that trains your own team.

Questions buyers ask us first
01What does an on-demand app development company build?+
An on-demand app development company builds the customer app, the provider app and the admin console. It also writes the payment, onboarding and dispute rules that connect them. Hashlogics builds all of that for service, delivery and rental apps. For WorkMateAI, that meant held payments on Stripe Connect, provider checks and a phased dispute process.
02Can you build an app like Uber or TaskRabbit?+
Yes, in shape: a customer app, a provider app and an admin console, with matching, held payments and disputes. We don't copy a brand or its screens. We build your rules for who gets the job, when the provider is paid and who answers a chargeback. Start with one service in one area, then add more once the money paths hold up. A super app is many of these joined together, so we start you with one.
03Should I use a clone app script?+
Use a clone script to test demand quickly in one market, and build when real money and real disputes arrive. Vendors such as Oyelabs sell customizable scripts with source code. What you'll still need to decide is who carries a chargeback, when providers get paid, and which checks your trade needs. Those rules are specific to your market and your terms.
04How do held payments and disputes work?+
On Stripe Connect, a held-payment app takes the customer's payment on the platform and delays the provider's payout, using manual payouts, until the job is confirmed. With manual payouts, Stripe holds funds in the provider's balance until you release them. The limit depends on the business's country: 2 years in the United States, 10 days in Thailand and 90 days elsewhere. A card authorization hold is another option with its own expiry. If it expires before you capture the funds, the funds are released.
05Is a held payment the same as escrow?+
No. Stripe says escrow has a precise legal definition, and that it doesn't provide escrow services or support escrow accounts. What Stripe offers is control over payout timing, such as manual payouts. So we describe the feature as held payments, and your own terms say when money is released.
06Do you build grocery or food delivery apps?+
Yes. You get the same three apps, plus dispatch to the nearest free courier and live tracking for your customer. One order can pay a store and a courier, so the payment split is settled in the Blueprint before any screen is built. Medicine delivery adds prescription and pharmacy checks your local rules require.
07Do on-demand apps have to use Apple or Google in-app purchase?+
No, for physical goods and services consumed outside the app. Apple's guidelines say those apps must use purchase methods other than in-app purchase, such as Apple Pay or credit card entry. Google Play says its billing system must not be used for physical services such as transportation, cleaning and food delivery. Apple also requires an app that supports account creation to offer account deletion within the app. Its guidance says deletion removes the data the developer isn't legally required to maintain. We build to the current guidelines, and each store makes its own review decision.
08How much does an on-demand app cost?+
There's no honest range before an engineer reads your plans and systems. Cost moves with the number of apps, the charge type, and how many checks providers pass. Start with a free scoping call. Then a fixed-fee Blueprint, credited in full against the build, gives you a fixed price for each milestone. If the plan isn't one you'd act on, you don't pay for it.
09Can you take over an on-demand app built from a clone script?+
Yes, and it starts with the Blueprint. An engineer reads and runs the codebase, then writes down what to keep and what to replace, with a fixed price for each milestone. We read your money paths first, because that's where a change costs the most later.
10Do you build on-demand apps for startups or for enterprises?+
Both. A startup usually wants one city and one service live with the money rules right, so we build narrow and measure it. An enterprise adding a marketplace to an existing business wants role-based admin access, audit logs and links to the systems it already runs. WorkMateAI's build carries role-based admin access and audit logging for every dispute action.
